🎓 Apply to College (CUNY / SUNY)

The CUNY Admissions page provides a comprehensive hub for applying across its 25 colleges and a broad range of programs—from associate and bachelor’s degrees to graduate studies, continuing education, and visiting student options.
The site clearly guides different applicant types—future students, prior students, NYC public school seniors (via the Fast App), graduate applicants, and others—through tailored application flows, fees, and deadlines The City University of New York+2The City University of New York+2.

  • Application fees typically range from freshmen to  transfer applicants, with multiple opportunities to request waivers depending on eligibility—like being a current CUNY student, New York State resident, veteran, or facing economic hardship The City University of New York+1.

  • Support tools include:

    • Video tutorials for completing the application

    • A centralized process for submitting supporting materials

    • Tools to track status via the CUNYfirst portal, where you can claim your account and monitor admissions decisions The City University of New York+1.

    • The CUNY Counselor Portal, which gives high school counselors real-time access to application statuses, missing documents, and fee waiver requests—boosting student support and completion

The SUNY admissions site walks applicants through the applySUNY portal, which covers applications across most SUNY campuses in one integrated system SUNYBig Ideas Blog.

  • Application checklist includes:

    1. Decide on campuses and programs.

    2. Preview application questions (via a worksheet).

    3. Create an account.

    4. Fill out and submit the application.

    5. Pay the application fee ($50 per campus).

    6. Receive confirmation and check status (visible within ~48 hours).

    7. Send counselor or other supplemental forms as needed SUNY+1Big Ideas Blog.

  • Important timeline notes:

  • Application fee waivers are available for various groups—such as transfer students from SUNY or CUNY with associate degrees, EOP applicants, veterans and their families, and AmeriCorps alumni—with up to seven college choices covered SUNY.

  • Technical help: Applying through applySUNY saves progress automatically, allows printing of application pages, and supports edits before final submission. Corrections post-submission must be handled via the Recruitment Response Center or each college directly SUNY.

  • Test requirements: SAT/ACT scores are temporarily suspended for undergraduate admissions through the current review cycle, and English proficiency tests (like TOEFL) may be required for some applicants—check with your campus

      FAFSA:https://studentaid.gov/

  • Purpose: The FAFSA is the primary application for federal student aid, including grants, work-study, and loans, and is commonly used by colleges, states, and private institutions to determine eligibility for financial aid packages.Federal Student Aid+1

  • How it works:

    • You create a StudentAid.gov account (your FAFSA account), which acts as your legal signature and allows you to start, submit, and track your application.Federal Student Aid+1

    • Applicants must provide student identity, personal circumstances, demographic and financial information, and their list of colleges. Optional contributors (e.g., parents, spouse) must also create their own accounts and submit their portions.Federal Student Aid+1

    • Once submitted, you'll receive a FAFSA Submission Summary (replacing the former Student Aid Report), which confirms your Student Aid Index (SAI), estimated Pell Grant eligibility, and what corrections or next steps might be needed.Federal Student Aid+2Federal Student Aid+2

  • Takeaway: Completing the FAFSA is your first step toward receiving federal (and potentially state or institutional) financial aid.

 

 

      TAP:https://www.hesc.ny.gov/NYSTAP

  • Purpose: TAP is a New York State grant program that helps residents pay for tuition at approved in-state institutions. It does not need to be repaid.HESC

  • Eligibility Criteria:

    • Must be a legal NY State resident for at least 12 continuous months or qualify under the NYS DREAM Act.HESC+1

    • Income thresholds for the 2024–25 year:

      • Dependent students: NTI ≤ $125,000

      • Married, independent without dependents: NTI ≤ $60,000

      • Single, independent without dependents: NTI ≤ $30,000HESC+1

    • Must be enrolled full-time (12+ credits), or eligible for part-time/non-degree TAP if taking fewer credits.HESCHESC

  • Application & Deadlines:

    • You must complete the FAFSA first, then apply for TAP through your HESC account using your HESCPIN.HESC+1

    • TAP must be applied for each year to continue receiving funds.HESC
